In 1996, Diana, Princess of Wales and Prince Charles got divorced after a 15 year marriage. Undoubtedly, one of the major contributing factors towards the public breakdown of the royal couple’s union was what Diana herself once described as the “third person in their marriage” – Camilla Parker Bowles. In Andrew Morton’s controversial biography Diana: Her True Story, first published in 1992, Diana recalled “one of the bravest moments” of her marriage, a calculated confrontation with Camilla herself at a 40th birthday party for Camilla’s sister, of all places. It was a nightmare come true for Prince Charles when he learned that Diana planned to attend the birthday party.
In an explosive tell-all book “The Duchess of Cornwall: Camilla’s Story and Secrets”, author Jessica Jayne explains that Diana and Camilla have gone out a few times together before Diana’s wedding to Charles; eight years later, they come face-to-face in a heated confrontation.
The two women in his life were about to meet again, at a time when he had just resumed his affair with Camilla.
Diana revealed in secretly-recorded tapes for a book by Andrew Morton, that “Charles and Camilla suddenly disappeared during the party, and Diana went to look for them.”
According to the book, Diana was “terrified” of Camilla but still decided to confront her.
Charles and Camilla had escaped downstairs to have a private conversation with another male friend.
Diana found them, and is said to have told Charles and the male friend: “OK boys, I’m just going to have a quick word with Camilla and I’ll be up in a minute.”
According to the book Diana recalled: “And they shot upstairs like chickens with no heads.”
Diana then added: “I could feel, upstairs, all hell breaking loose — ‘What is she going to do?'”
The Princess apologized for “being in the way” of Charles and Camilla and told her not to treat her like an idiot.
Diana told Camilla: “I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.”
Camilla’s response was: “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?”
“I want my husband”, the Princess replied.
Though she admitted to being “terrified” of Camilla, Diana recalled staying “deathly calm.” “The voice inside me had said, ‘just go for it,'” she said in a taped conversation.
Charles took Diana home after the heated confrontation and scalded her for her behaviour towards Camilla, after which the Prince called Camilla to apologise, author Jessica Jayne claims.
