PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Microsoft set to put even more pressure on Sony?

PS5 and Xbox Series X will be two of the biggest gaming talking points this year with the next-gen of console gaming set to launch in 2020. Both Microsoft and Sony are currently pencilled in as releasing their new PlayStation and Xbox consoles during the holiday 2020 period. And ahead of the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X both Microsoft and Sony have been taking different pre-release approaches.

Microsoft has come out the blocks firing on all cylinders, dropping tonnes of details about the Xbox Series X that has caught gamers’ attention.

The Redmond-based tech firm were first to reveal the specs of their next console, games and what the console and controller actually looks like.

Sony, meanwhile, has been taking a more slow-burning approach – revealing tidbits of information bit-by-bit.

This week Sony did hold an event that detailed the specs of the PS5 but it was a very tech-heavy event mainly aimed at developers.

No doubt Sony will hold a proper unveiling event for the PS5 ahead of its launch which will excite gamers much more.

But when that happens remains to be seen, and in the meantime Microsoft could be about to launch a big blow to Sony.

Sony are believed to have just one next-gen model in the works while the Xbox team are rumoured to have two SKUs.

One of these is the Xbox Series X, which has already been unveiled, but the other is the rumoured Lockhart console.

This is rumoured to be the equivalent of the Xbox One S to the Series X’s Xbox Series X.

So, Lockhart will be a less powerful console than the Series X which will come in at a lower price point.

It is believed that this price point will be even lower than the PS5’s which analysts have predicted could be between $399 and $499.

The Xbox Series X price is rumoured to be up to $599 while the Lockhart is predicted to undercut both and cost around $300.

If that’s the case then that could be a very appealing price point which could give Microsoft a huge advantage in the next-gen console wars.

At the start of the last gen the PS4 was priced $100 cheaper than the Xbox One which helped make it a much more appealing proposition to consumers.

And the PS4 never looked back from there, going onto become the best selling console of this gen and one of the most successful of all time.

Microsoft look to be trying to adopt a similar tactic with the rumoured Lockhart model.

And it is believed to be getting unveiled soon, with teases that an announcement could be happening shortly.

The latest tease came courtesy of Jez Corden, tech writer and an editor at Windows Central, who cryptically tweeted lock and green heart emojis.

Fans have been left wondering if this a sign news on the rumoured Xbox Lockhart model is coming.

The other tease that Xbox Lockhart news could be coming soon comes courtesy of YouTuber DEALER.

The Xbox YouTuber recently tweeted: “Hearing that Microsoft will share Lockhart details for the first time, soon.

“Should give insight into Xbox’s multi Sku approach to the next generation.

“Remember, this console with 4TF Navi GPU & Zen CPU is entry model & overall better than X1-X today. Around $300. #xbox”.

While the Xbox Lockhart could seriously undercut the price of the Series X and PS5 fans shouldn’t expect similar performance.

The Lockhart is rumoured to be capable of 4 teraflops, far less than the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Either way, having an attractively priced entry-level next-gen console could give Microsoft a big edge in the upcoming console wars.
