Meghan and Harry shocked royal watchers last week with their Instagram announcement that they would be stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family. The Queen yesterday issued a statement, after she called crisis talks at Sandringham with Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry to discuss the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In it, Her Majesty indicated that there were still many issues to work through, but that she and the Royal Family had accepted that Harry and Meghan wanted to “create a new life as a young family”.
The statement read, in part: “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
Podcast Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.
In this week’s latest episode, Mr Myers discussed how a key flaw in Harry and Meghan’s plans to step down, yet keep working in some royal capacity, is the advisory team they have chosen to take on board.
Mr Myers said: “It seems they’ve taken this decision to hit the nuclear button on their royal careers.

“They are certainly being advised by people who have zero understanding of the Royal Family has worked previously.
“And arguably, some people will say, that is potentially refreshing
“They want these progressive roles.
“I’m not totally against this, how it could work, they need some breathing space.”

However, he added: “They’ve gone against the Queen’s wishes.
“The Queen would have wanted to keep everything in-house, to try to formulate a plan of how this could work.
“[The Palace] didn’t know this was happening.
“And yet Harry and Meghan published a very fancy website about how they see their new royal roles working, and it’s left everyone absolutely dumbfounded.”

Ms Gripper added: “It was lovely that William and Kate had their cottage in Anglesey, and then in Norfolk.
“They could work out what their life was.
“[William and Kate] were part-time royals, they weren’t on the senior royal rota.
“I think for me, [Harry and Meghan] have just gone straight, all in.”
Mr Myers continued: “I think that what this boils down to, is a breakdown in a family relationship.
“Two people who have thought they’ve had no option but to pull the trigger on their relationship with their family.
“That’s the real concerning part here.”
Mr Myers has previously expressed concern about the teams advising the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking on the podcast in July, he also postulated that Harry and Meghan were not taking advice from their Palace aides.
He said: “It seems like they’re careering from one disaster to another.
“People I’m speaking to who are close to the Sussexes and close to the household are saying that they just don’t take advice.
“That is a major problem for them.”
On this week’s podcast, Mr Myers also discussed the potential problems the Sussexes may face with corporate entities, instead of the Palace press offices, behind them.
He said: “Who is doing the due diligence, when they haven’t got the whole vehicle of the Royal Family behind them, now?
“They’ve got potentially profit-driven companies behind them, like the PR arm that they are using in the States, or other advisors that they are taking on.”
