Ryan Mason speaks out on Tottenham top-four hopes as boss fumes at VAR after Leeds loss

Ryan Mason is unsure that Tottenham’s top four hopes are over despite their 3-1 defeat against Leeds United, but bemoaned the decision to rule out a Harry Kane goal that would have put his side into the lead at Elland Road.

Kane appeared to put Spurs 2-1 ahead in the 30th minute, collecting a pass before finishing past Illan Meslier.

But the goal was ruled out following a lengthy VAR check. It was unclear which part of the England captain was definitively beyond the Leeds defence, but it was most likely the end of his boot.

The offside was given at a time when the north Londoners were on top having just equalised through Son Heung-min. Leeds had opened the scoring thanks to Stuart Dallas’ eighth goal of the season.

Leeds regained their lead just prior to half-time through Patrick Bamford. Rodrigo added a third on the counter-attack as Spurs swarmed forward in search of an equaliser.

This was Mason’s first defeat in the Premier League. He had won his first two matches, although lost against Manchester City in last month’s Carabao Cup final.

Spurs are sixth in the top-flight, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea having played one game more.

“I don’t know,” Mason later added when asked in his press conference if his side’s top-four chances were over. “Look, today is a disappointing result for us. We wanted to come here and win the game.

“We haven’t done that. That’s very disappointing. We have to get over this and we have to work well this week and hopefully get three points next weekend.”
