Shearings Holidays collapses – thousands of coach trips cancelled and 2,500 jobs lost

The administrator of Specialist Leisure Group (SLG), EY, confirmed today that it had made more than 2,000 staff redundant. The Specialist Leisure Group operated several businesses that sold holidays and other travel arrangements. Some of the businesses include: UK, National Holidays, Bay Hotels, Coast & Country hotels, Country Living Hotels, Caledonian Travel, Wallace Arnold Travel and

Administrators will also be contacting the customers whose travel plans may be impacted by the collapse or due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Customers will be contacted in writing.

Joint administrator of Specialist Leisure Group, Sam Woodward, said the group was impacted heavily by COVID-19 and its devastating effect on the travel industry.

He said in a statement: “The group has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as all tours, trips and events have been cancelled and the hotels closed to the public, leading to a significant cash shortfall.

“The directors of the group have been in discussions with a number of parties, seeking a going concern buyer for the business.

“Unfortunately, despite interest in the group as a whole and in parts, no viable transaction structure was able to be agreed and, as a result, the group was placed into administration.”

The devastating move has led to 2,460 people losing their jobs.

He added: “Our immediate priority is to advise and support those employees and customers that have been impacted by the group’s insolvency.

“We are making every effort to contact all customers, who have had their bookings cancelled as a result of the administrations or COVID-19, with information to assist them in making a claim.

“Customers should be assured that claims do not need to be submitted immediately and refunds will continue to be accepted for up to six months.”

Andrew McConnell, spokesperson for ATOL, said some people will be ATOL protected if they have flight-inclusive packages.

He said: “This is a particularly sad day for customers and employees of Shearings Holidays Ltd, a longstanding business and well known UK travel company.

“The company specialised in coach packages and other types of holiday bookings, however there are a small number of consumers with flight-inclusive packages, which will be ATOL protected.

“For these bookings, we will be contacting consumers directly or via their agent to provide guidance and support.”

The company offered a range of coach and self-drive breaks via air travel or cruises.

It was founded by Herbert Shearing in 1919.
