Stranger Things theories: Dr. Brenner to die after bringing back Eleven’s powers

Before the Lovecraftian Mind Flayer began infesting the population of Hawkins, the sinister Dr. Brenner (played by Matthew Modine) served as the series’ main antagonist.

He featured heavily in the first season as the Head Scientist behind the cruel experiments that gave Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) her telekinetic powers.

The trauma over the last few years of Eleven’s new life in Hawkins have recently wiped out her powers, but most fans agree they will somehow return in the next season.

When Netflix subscribers last left Stranger Things, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) had taken in Eleven as one of her own and planned to leave Hawkins.

Moreover, a recent trailer revealed former Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour) actually survived the explosion underneath the Starcourt Mall, and is now being held prisoner in a Russian labour camp.

With Hawkins left potentially undefended, one fan took to Reddit to suggest Eleven could once again fall victim to Dr. Brenner.

He was last seen suffering a grisly attack from the Demogorgon in season one, but the majority of Stranger Things’ huge audience aren’t completely convinced he was killed.

This fan’s intriguing theory proposes Dr. Brenner could be instrumental in returning Eleven’s powerful telekinetic abilities.

Redditor SpencerTheFan said: “I think Dr. Brenner will die in season 4 when helping El get her powers back. Why? well you might think he’s already dead but it’s said in season 2 that he’s alive AND if we look back in past seasons there’s a pattern of people dying with the first letter of the name being B.”

Despite being attacked by the Demogorgon, Dr. Brenner returned throughout season two in visions and flashbacks, hinting Matthew Modine could return to the series in a larger capacity.

Moreover, fans have already pointed out a foreboding trend for characters whose names begin with the letter ‘B’.

So far throughout the series, characters with the names Barb (Shannon Purser), Bob (Sean Astin), Bruce (Jake Busey) and Billy (Dacre Montgomery) have all met their doom on Stranger Things.

Brenner seemed to have been killed in season one, but if he makes an unexpected return in season four this pattern indicates he could be killed for good this time.

Other fans took to the comments and agreed with the premise, with one adding: “I think many of us have been wanting a return of Brenner and this vulnerable time in El’s life would make for some interesting drama.

“And if he does, I think it’s a good bet that the show will ensure his death in one form or another before the series ends.

“I feel like the narrative demands it for El’s closure, but I will say that the show has leaned in too hard on this gimmick of killing characters whose names begin with ‘B’.”

Perhaps the twin co-creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, may avoid this trend in future as it has become a little too easy for viewers to guess which character will meet their demise.

Throughout the series, Eleven has experienced almost nothing but danger and personal tragedy, so Dr. Brenner’s death would bring a sense of closure to her troubled past.

Whatever happens in the fourth season, the Stranger Things community seems to be in agreement when it comes to Dr. Brenner returning to wreak havoc on the kids of Hawkins once again.

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
