Supermarkets online deliveries: New rules from Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, supermarkets in Britain really stepped up to help by increasing online delivery slots, introducing essential food boxes and providing priority shopping times to the vulnerable and elderly. In addition to the added provisions, supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, all changed their operations in a bid to “feed the nation” during the crisis. explores the new rules in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons as the coronavirus lockdown begins to wind down.


Tesco is expanding its home delivery and click and collect capacity by recruiting new staff and drivers.

Tesco has introduced a limit of one click and collect order per person per week.

The store has managed to double its online capacity since the start of the pandemic.

Vulnerable customers who feel as though they cannot safely shop in store but who want to access private online slots should call 0800 917 7359 for help.

Priority delivery slots have an eight-hour window, either from 10am to 6pm or 2pm to 10pm.

There is currently a limit of three units per customer on certain items.

Items deemed essential include face masks and coverings, antibacterial hand wash, antibacterial wipes, flour and eggs.

The supermarket is now accepting new online registrations to access home delivery and click and collect services but is still not accepting any new delivery pass applications.

Sainsbury’s has started removing some limits on the number of certain non-essential products you can buy.

The store is temporarily limiting delivery slots to one per customer within a seven day period, but you can still amend your order up to a day before it is expected.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said: “We are continuing to prioritise the nation’s most vulnerable people for our delivery slots and have increased capacity to over 650,000 orders a week. We have also recently rolled out our one-hour grocery delivery service Chop Chop beyond London and is now in 15 cities.

Asda has upped its delivery slots from 450,000 a week to 700,000 in a bid to keep up with increased demand.

Like many supermarkets, Asda is selling food boxes comprised of store cupboard essentials, which has been reduced from £30 to £25.

Delivery drivers are keeping safe by maintaining a two-metre distance between themselves and customers, and are provided with sanitiser and cleaning materials for every order.

Asda has given existing care homes priority access to delivery slots, while new delivery passes are not available right now.


Morrisons is now offering customers 16 different varieties of food boxes for home delivery, as well as delivery Bouquet Boxes of flowers for just £20.

You will need to register on their website to use either service, while food boxes can also be ordered via phone with next day delivery by calling 0345 611 6111.

Amazon Prime members can now order same-day Morrisons grocery deliveries, a service which was extended to more than 40 stores at the end of May.

Morrisons has introduced a strict limit of five items per customer on every product line online.
