Team GB Women’s Hockey side pull off dramatic shoot-out win to keep gold medal dream alive

Team GB’s hopes of retaining its gold medal in Women’s Hockey are still alive after a dramatic win over Spain in Monday’s quarter-final.

Team GB will now face the Netherlands in Wednesday’s semi-final for a chance to play in the gold medal game.

After a tense game against Spain, the match went to a penalty shoot-out.

And Maddie Hitch made herself the hero of the game by saving all five of Spain’s penalties.

The win means Team GB can keep their hopes of winning back-to-back gold medals alive.

Back in Rio in 2016, Team GB took gold by beating the Netherlands on penalties, with Hinch saving all four penalties on that occasion too.

There was drama in the shoot-out on Monday morning when Team GB thought they had progressed to the final, only for referees to intervene.

Hinch was ruled to have made accidental contact with one of Spain’s penalty takers, forcoing a re-take.

However, when Beatriz Perez stepped up again, Hinch again stopped her penalty, with Perez then sending her rebound over the bar.

Following that save, Hinch was swarmed by her team-mates while Spain’s players crumpled to the floor in despair.

The game itself was tense enough, with Team GB looking set to win 2-1 before Spain scored an equaliser in the final quarter.

Hannah Martin and Grace Balsdon scored Team GB’s goals in normal time, with Martin then scoring in the penalty shoot-out as well.

Sarah Jones scored what turned out to be the winner, with Hinch’s heroics in the net proving decisive in sending Team GB to the semi-final.

Speaking prior to the games, Hinch revealed the secrets behind her impressive streak in penalty shoot-outs.

She said: “When a shoot-out happens, I think great, this is your moment to shine.

“The hero status you can have, it’s a cool situation to be in and you should embrace it.

“If you’ve done your homework and you back yourself to make the saves, you’ll be fine.”
