The crucial WhatsApp feature we’ve been waiting for could finally launch soon

It’s been rumoured for a while but it finally seems WhatsApp is getting ready to unleash the ability to chat on multiple devices. There’s been plenty of speculation about when this vital upgrade will arrive but the latest reports from WABetainfo suggest it could be coming in the next few months.

The team, who have a track record for getting all things WhatsApp right, have just posted a message which states multiple device testing is taking place right now.

In the tweet, WABetainfo said: “From now on WhatsApp is internally starting some important tests for the multi device feature.

“It’s not available yet and there isn’t a release date: it could be next two months, four months, six months.. but it’s really positive that they have started to test it on the whole.”

The option to use the app on different devices is something its legion of fans have been wanting for years.

In theory, the new functionality should let you seamlessly use WhatsApp from one phone to another, or from a phone to a tablet. It could even allow users to switch seamlessly between iOS and Android devices which would be a huge bonus.

There’s no word on how this update will work but could mean WhatsApp is also finally ready to launch a dedicated iPad app.

At the moment, the only way to use WhatsApp on your iPad in conjunction with an iPhone is to use WhatsApp Web on your browser. Not ideal.

According to WABetaInfo, a future version of WhatsApp will give each user a “device list” that, as the name suggests, will show each phone or tablet that has been synced with a particular WhatsApp account.

We’ll have to wait and see when this update is actually released but hopefully fans of this massively popular app won’t have to wait too much longer.

Although multi device support isn’t available just yet there is an new feature users can try right now.

WhatsApp recently announced that it was doubling the number of participants its billion of users can have on a video or voice call from four to eight people at a time.

Speaking about the change, WhatsApp said: “Over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic. And just like written messages, all those calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions.”

To access the new, higher participant limit on WhatsApp calls, all participants in a call need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iPhone or Android.
