Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel of the same name has been expertly realised throughout the first three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale.
After securing the release of over 50 children from Gilead’s cruel regime, June suffered a potentially fatal altercation when she was shot by a guard in the final moments of season three’s epic finale.
Having been stationed with the unpredictable Commander Lawrence, June’s fate in season four remains unclear as she was last seen being carried away by her fellow Handmaid’s.
Lawrence is one of the most complicated characters introduced in the series so far, as he was implied to have masterminded major elements of Gilead’s repressive ideology.
Despite this, Lawrence has shown regret and even compassion for the Handmaid’s mission to liberate the children of Gilead, who faced a life of imprisonment and servitude if they hadn’t escaped.
As a key player pulling the strings of the dystopian regime, most viewers are convinced the Commander will eventually face devastating consequences for his contribution to the building of Gilead.
Some fans have taken to Reddit to speculate whether Lawrence already knows his remaining time among the living will soon be cut short.
Redditor minute14 posted: “I heard people on here talking about him being like the Nazi’s economist. He was way more than this.”
The fan continued: “Even if he doesn’t defect and Gilead survives, he will eventually be killed by his own people.
“It is assumed that although he is respected, many don’t like him. Once he outlives his usefulness, he can be killed just for this very reason.”
Having proven himself to be a dangerous liability for Gilead’s cause by helping June, as well as an instigator for genocide by the rest of the world, Lawrence will be cornered by enemies from all sides throughout season four.
Finally, the fan added: “Besides this, he has broken major Gilead laws on many occasions. These will probably eventually catch up with him.
“Maybe a best-case scenario for him is spending the rest of his life in prison, but even that may be far-fetched.”
With June bleeding from a severe wound and the Handmaid’s possibly making their way underground, the future is uncertain for several factions when season four finally returns to Hulu.
When it comes to Commander Lawrence, however, most fans agree there can only be one outcome for the Gilead mastermind after his previous actions.
