The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 theory: Marthas to face mass execution for Canada escape plan

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 theory: Marthas to face mass execution for Canada escape plan

The entertainment industry has largely been put on hold amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As filming for The Handmaid’s Tale new season for Hulu is stalled, fans have taken it upon themselves to predict what’s coming up in the new episodes.

Although June’s (played by Elisabeth Moss) plan to smuggle children into Canada succeeded, a near-fatal altercation with a Gilead guard could leave her incapacitated for much of season four.

As the rule of Gilead’s backwards regime starts to spread throughout North America, Canada may not be the safe haven it was in season three.

Moreover, as even the state’s biggest champions, such as Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) begin to have second thoughts about their beliefs, season four could feature several pivotal moments in the ongoing fight for women’s freedom.

The oppressive regime of Gilead splits American women up into multiple camps, namely handmaids and Marthas.

While handmaids tend to be younger women who are able to become pregnant by Gilead’s Commanders, Marthas tend to household duties such as cooking, cleaning and looking after new children.

As the handmaids move underground in upcoming episodes and the Marthas remain under Gilead’s watchful eye, many fans are predicting the new season will open with a significant death toll.

Some viewers have taken to an extensive discussion post on Reddit to speculate whether season four will feature a mass execution among the Marthas.

One fan posted: “I do believe MANY Martha’s will be executed to show Gilead’s power. I don’t think the Handmaidens will feel much wrath if any.”

Gilead continues to feel the strain of June and the handmaid’s brewing rebellion, as the escape of almost 100 new children into Canada dealt them a significant blow.

With the state’s grip on the world stage becoming more precarious, fans are convinced Gilead will need to resort to violent tactics in the upcoming season to demonstrate their stranglehold on the nation’s women.

Additionally, the fan continued to suggest Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), a founding father of Gilead who turned against his beliefs to assist June, could also be made an example of in season four.

They added: “I question whether they will use Lawrence as the scapegoat as the mastermind. I’m curious if that was the case, would they publicly execute him or maybe discuss a trade with Canada?”

Whatever the case, the new season will undoubtedly see some major repercussions for the rebellious actions taken against Gilead.

Returning to the Marthas, another fan commented: “And handmaids aren’t even noticed before breakfast, and even then more by the Martha’s than the Commander and Wife. Half the time they’re ignored.”

While the handmaids are essentially treated as passive objects by the Commanders of Gilead, the Marthas have been demonstrated to be under more suspicion for acts of rebellion.

Finally, the viewer added: “The Martha’s on the other hand? Yikes. A dozen missing. They’re gonna be purged so bad.”

Meanwhile, another fan proposed even the handmaids will get tortured for information regarding June’s daring plan.

Although viewers were never expecting a more optimistic instalment of the dystopian series, these theories suggest season four of The Handmaid’s Tale will be even harder to watch than usual.

Plus, with the publication of Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel The Testaments last year, Hulu has even more grisly content to mine from as the franchise continues.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu.
