The Matrix 4: Keanu Reeves details the ‘ONLY reason’ he is returning to play Neo

The Matrix arrived in cinemas back in 1999 to incredible praise. Viewers of the William Gibson-esque film were catapulted into a whimsical world full of hackers, virtual realities, and psychotic computer programmes. Fans of the franchise were left ecstatic earlier this year when it was revealed the fourth film in the franchise would be arriving in 2022.

The Matrix received two sequels shortly after its release – The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Matrix: Revolutions.

While this trilogy completed the incredible story of Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) and his team of rebels, it looks like the hero, and the story, are going to be brought back from the dead.

With so much mystery surrounding the Matrix franchise, fans are eager to see what director Lana Wachowski has in store for them.

And now, Neo star Keanu has spoken out about what convinced him to return to his iconic role, and indeed the show-stopping franchise.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Reeves explained: “Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me.

“That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing.

“It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”

Trinity actor Carrie-Ann Moss also gave her thoughts in the same interview.

On The Matrix returning, she confessed: “I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all.”

The actor also praised the script, of which nothing has been revealed just yet.

Moss explained the story has “incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine”.

Reeves previously spoke to Entertainment Tonight where he gave some further hints about the film’s script.

“It’s very ambitious,” Reeves announced. “As it should be!”

Lana Wachowski also gave a statement about the film regarding her and her sister, Lilly Wachowski, taking the reins of the franchise once again.

In the statement she said: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

It seems the sisters have the support of their bosses, as Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, Toby Emmerich, recently demonstrated.

He announced: “Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker.

“We are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter.”

The Matrix 4 is set to release April 1, 2022.
