Clean balls, please

There’s been plenty of changes brought in for the return of Premier League football, but not all of them have been a hit.

I think we all agree that disinfecting the balls is sensible and mildly humorous. Yes, I’m immature. Clubs are also allowed five substitutions and nine players on the bench. Staggered entry on to pitch for players, no handshakes before kick-off.

All fairly normal stuff. But… but… the one that has caused mass hysteria is the artificial crowd noise.

Yep, I’m going there.

Sky Sports are offering the option of watching the match with artificial crowd noise. It’s basically pre-recorded fan noise – so plenty of “Oooooh” and “Aaahs” heard for chances and fouls etc.

I’m going to take pelters for this… but I actually like it. Fight me!

Race for the top four?

Try top three! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t given up hope of catching third-placed Leicester.

Manchester United go into tonight’s clash against former manager Jose Mourinho three points adrift of Chelsea in fifth place and eight points shy of Leicester in third.

“It’s a big two months for us and if we can get everyone up to speed as quick as we can we have got a good chance of challenging for trophies and challenging for the top three positions,” Solskjaer said. “We have to look upwards.”

Spurs are in eight. Just four points behind United – so a win tonight could be huge for the north London club. One of those must-wins everyone’s been talking about…

Canaries down and out…

Norwich look a beaten and deflated team. They now trail Southampton 3-0 at Carrow Road courtesy of Nathan Redmond. The attacker quite literally strolls through the heart of midfield and slots it unchallenged beyond Tim Krul.

They have eight fixtures remaining, are rock-bottom of the table and four points behind their nearest rivals Aston Villa.

Twitter round-up

Georgie: Paul Pogba on the bench is annoying. I know Manchester United were on a good run before COVID-19 but I want to see the masterplan… if there is one!

Kay: Can someone please tell me why Paul Pogba is on the bench and Daniel James starts? I don’t mind that Anthony Martial is ahead of Odion Igahlo but has Ole gone mad, putting Paul on the bench?!

Ryan: Right… Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have pace galore, so The Special One decides that Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are best equipped to deal with them.

Vikram: This will be a tough game, make no mistake about it. Jose’s teams are known to perform when no one expects them to. Plus Harry Kane being back is another threat.

My thoughts exactly, Ryan. But who knows…

Team news – Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has opted for SIX change from the 1-1 draw with Burnley. If memory serves he wasn’t best pleased after that fixture…

Anyway, Harry Kane returns from a long-term injury lay-off. He’s in the centre-forward role with Son Heung-min on the right and Steven Bergwijn on the left of Erik Lamela.

Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Ben Davies and Serge Aurier all come in.

Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are the centre-back pairing… hmmm… how do we feel about that Spurs fans?

Team news – Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer resists the urge to start fit-again Paul Pogba. The Norwegian tactician instead places his faith in youth – handing a start to Scott McTominay.

Striker Marcus Rashford makes his first start since coming off injured against Wolves in January. He leads the line, flanked by Anthony Martial and Daniel James.

Elsewhere Nemanja Matic and Brandon Williams drop to the bench having started in United’s last outing against Manchester City all those months ago. Luke Shaw starts.

Oh, and Victor Lindelof makes his 100th start for the Red Devils. Many congratulations to him.

The opener

Danny Ings has broken the deadlock at Carrow Road. Having struck the crossbar in the first half, the Southampton striker has made no mistake in slotting home just after the break. It’s Norwich 0-1 Southampton.

Not sure if you’re watching, but it seems criminal that the Canaries aren’t just going for it. They are miles behind 19th-placed Aston Villa – but it’s all very calm, measured and calculated.

Just bloody go for it, lads! And just as I publish that, Stuart Armstrong makes it 2-0.

Extra, extra…

“But Jamie, I can’t watch this fixture unless I can read the match programme from cover to cover beforehand,” says a non-fictitious person.

Joking aside, for those wanting to supplement their exceptional pre-match reading (thank you), you can download tonight’s digital matchday programme online by clicking this link HERE.

I’m told there’s an exclusive interviews with Club Chairman Daniel Levy, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Jose Mourinho. Steven Bergwijn also gives a lifestyle Q&A – whatever that means.

All that for the cool, cool price of £1.99.

Elsewhere…

I’m contractually obliged to keep you updated on events at Carrow Road. Danny Ings hit the crossbar and Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl looks like he spent lockdown in the wilderness fighting bears. It’s Norwich 0-0 Southampton.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Tottenham vs Manchester United.

D’ya remember people discussing how the 100-day Premier League absence would affect each team and perhaps change the course of the 2019/2020 season?

Yes? Well we needn’t have bothered. Certainly on the evidence thus far anyway.

Manchester City are still brilliant, Sheffield United still keep clean sheets, Norwich still struggle to score and Arsenal still find innovative new ways to be ridiculed.

… actually, I guess a David Luiz mistake isn’t new or innovative…

Anyway, we’re here to see whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United can pick up from where they left off and continue their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

We’re also here to see if Jose Mourinho change Tottenham’s fortunes with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min back at his disposal.

Let’s get going!

TOTTENHAM vs MANCHESTER UNITED – TEAM NEWS

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will start against Manchester United tonight, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

The England talisman has not featured since suffering a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring in the New Year’s Day defeat to Southampton.

“He is working extremely well, I can tell you no problem he is going to start the game,” Mourinho said. “Does he have 90 minutes, 80, 70, 60? I don’t know. Only the game will tell us that.”

Attacker Son Heung-min will also start but midfielder Dele Alli is suspended for a social media post mocking coronavirus. Giovani Lo Celso will have an injury assessed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has both Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford at his disposal.

The England forward has recovered from a stress fracture in his back, while Pogba has overcome a troublesome ankle injury. Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones are injured.
