Fuel pumps will be fitted with brand new E10 fuel from next year as the UK joins neighbouring European nations in stocking the product. The new petrol could become the standard across UK forecourts from 2021 in a desperate bid to reduce overall emissions levels.

He said: “The next 15 years will be absolutely crucial for slashing emissions from our roads, as we all start to feel the benefits of the transition to a zero-emission future.

“Before electric cars become the norm, we want to take advantage of reduced CO2 emissions.

“This small switch to petrol containing bioethanol at 10 per cent will help drivers reduce the environmental impact of every journey.”
E10 fuel is currently used alongside regular alternatives around Germany, France and Finland meaning the new option has been tried and tested.

Finland has championed the new petrol with the Finnish Petroleum and Biofuels Association reporting E10 made up a 63 percent share of the market.

The nation has increased its share of petrol sold each year proving E10 could be popular among UK motorists.

In an important starting point, Department for Transport has said it expects E10 to continue at the standard rate of petrol.

This means fuel prices are unlikely to rise while the existing unleaded petal will remain as the premium grade product at a higher forecourt price.

However, according to the RAC, there are fears the new fuel may not be accessible to many vehicles on the road in the UK.

He warns traditional E5 fuel would still be usable but is concerned not every fuel station will stock the old product.

Edmund King, AA President, backed up the comments as he confirmed a dual system was needed across the UK.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “To cater for all drivers we will need a dual system as we had with leaded/unleaded fuels.

“However, one tankful of E10 mistakenly put into in an older E5 car should not cause problems.

“Forecourts, though, are bound to get more crowded with E5, E10, super-unleaded, diesel, electric charging points and, potentially, more hydrogen pumps.”
