When fans returned to season four, a peculiar avian detail in the background of episode 12 threatened to sabotage the show’s normally serious tone.
One fan took to Reddit and posted: “How is there an emu in Kattegat?”
While the idea of an emu making its way all the way to medieval Scandinavia seems incredibly implausible, a cursory look through episode 12 reveals the anachronistic bird did somehow sneak into the beginning of the episode.
The world’s second largest flightless bird and close cousin to the ostrich are native to Australia, and would have no way of getting to Kattegat around the 8th-9th centuries.
