Who Wants To Be A Millionaire presenter Jeremy Clarkson was left astounded on Monday night when a contestant’s phone a friend pal provided the correct answer without even hearing the multiple choice options. Fans will know that the contestant is given a 30 second window in which to read the question and the four potential answers, but the exchange was over in less than five seconds.
The contestant chose to use her lifeline phone a friend, where she called her pal John.
The question asked what country the CDU and the SPD political parties were from.
But before she’d even finished reading the question, John came straight back.
“Germany!” he stated, clearly and confidently.
While she was taken aback which Jeremy’s jaw fell to the floor.
The options were A. Le Mans 24 Hours B. Monaco Grand Prix C. Indy 500 or D. Isle Of Man TT.
Andrew could have used with John, as his friend didn’t know the answer either.
Explaining his decision to chose to walk away with the £500,000, he said: “I don’t know the answer and it’s just too much money to lose.
“Having got so far and to go on a whim I think would be foolish and Niagara Falls is looking very nice at this time,” he said of his planned trip.
But Mr Townsley would have made history if he went with his gut, as Isle Of Man TT was the correct answer.
Jeremy was blown away with his progress and congratulated him on being a “truly fabulous contender”.
After his stint on the show, he told The Sun: “I was actually 50/50. If I still had the 50/50 lifeline I would have.
“I thought it probably was the TT. But was I prepared to risk it?”
He added: “The show went very quick. That was my abiding memory of it. I found myself suddenly running out of questions in no time at all.”
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire airs at 9pm weekdays on ITV.
